My mother-in-law had been insulting me behind my back for years, so I recorded her. My husband’s reaction was priceless.

What if your mother-in-law talks badly about you to other people without telling your husband? One woman had that happen to her, and she told her shocking story online. You have no idea how angry her husband was when he found out!

It was people on Reddit who helped her.

I’m 29 years old and my husband is 31 years old. We’ve been married for three years. His mother, let’s call her Jane, has never liked me while we were together. She always says mean and passive-aggressive things, but she makes sure to do them when he’s not around. Whenever I tell him about it, he says I’m making it worse than it is or misinterpreting her.

When I went to Jane’s house a month ago, things really heated up. Jane was really funny as she made fun of the way I cook, work, and even dress. I was about to lose it, so I chose to do something about it myself.

When Jane and I were alone, I started using the voice memo app on my iPhone to record what we said. Over the next few weeks, I was able to write down some of her comments. “He must really love you to put up with your cooking,” she said. “Your job is so cute, it must be nice not to have any real responsibilities.”

As soon as Jane left for another visit last weekend, I chose to tell him the truth. The records were played for him. He didn’t say anything for a while because he looked shocked. He then said he couldn’t believe his mom would say those things.

He was mad at Jane at first, but then he became mad at me. He said that recording his mother without her knowledge was too much and that I was invading her privacy. He thought I had betrayed him because I hadn’t talked to him first.

I told him I had talked to him more than once and he still didn’t believe me, but he wouldn’t listen. He got his things together and went to his parents’ house to cool off. He still doesn’t want to come home and is mad at me. I’m not sure if what I did was too much or if this was what Jane needed to wake up.
