Sharing your life with someone who needs extra help can be hard. It can feel like their needs are more important than your own at times. It was there that one woman found herself. Her sister lives with their parents because she is in a wheelchair. Their relationship has always been geared toward her sister’s needs. These days, she felt like her own life was being held back.
She got in touch with us:
The older sister of mine lives with our parents and has to use a wheelchair to get around. We have always been there for her, and it makes sense that she has always gotten more attention.
Things changed a lot, though, when I moved out. I don’t have any good things to say about my life. When I tell my family about good news, like getting a new job or buying a car, they always tell me it’s “not the time” because my sister is sad and I shouldn’t brag about my life.
When I told them I was getting married and asked them to come, that was the last straw. My mom told me to be quiet and said, “You’re making your sister mad. Please be nicer.” I was shocked and mad. “It seems like they don’t care about me.”
