I messed up the funeral for my grandparents by showing everyone how bad my family is.

When someone close to us dies, it hurts so much that it feels like we’re being smashed. And when our grandparents die, they take a whole era with them. The main character today is a 33-year-old woman whose grandparents both died suddenly. The woman was very sad, but what shocked her even more was when her family members started acting badly at the funeral. They drowned in their own lies, and on that sad day, the woman showed everyone who they really were.

Camilla’s beloved grandparents died all of a sudden.

There was a 33-year-old woman named Camilla who wrote us an emotional letter and told us a story that made us feel a lot of different things. Some people thought badly of the woman because she did something, but she did it for a good reason. Camilla wanted justice because she couldn’t stand what was going on in her family and how it grew at the funeral for her grandparents.

“My grandparents died not long ago,” the woman began her letter. I had no idea this would happen, and I wasn’t emotionally ready to lose two very important people in my life on the same day. For their last event, I followed the rules that my grandmother set up ahead of time. She talked about the church and the gravesite, and she left detailed instructions for how to make the rest of the plans. My whole family didn’t think it would be a joint funeral.
For that reason, I told their friends and family about the date after it was set. I was shocked that none of their family members showed up, but all of their friends did. I was shocked by how rude they were, even though I hadn’t seen most of them in six years.

Camilla said, “I spent the day with friends of my grandparents and then went home to cry my heart out.” I was the only one taking care of my grandparents, and I couldn’t even think about what I would do without them.
For 17 years, I took care of them. At first, I just helped them with little things, like lifting heavy things. Eventually, I changed their bed twice a night most of the time. Because I felt so empty, I looked at my grandfather’s Facebook posts of pictures he had made before he died.

When she told Camilla something bad about her family, it shocked her a lot.

The needy woman continues her story by saying, “I found a Facebook group that had been around for about three years and was full of posts and comments.” If I kept looking around, I found that my mom was holding a funeral at her church and trying to get the costs of the funeral paid for. I was shocked.
I hadn’t talked to my mom since I kicked her out of the house for stealing some jewelry, which was a bad family moment. She really upset grandma that day when she said it was her Alzheimer’s that made her forget about her birthday.

Camilla chose to go to the funeral that her mother had planned. She said, “I went to the funeral that my mom planned and didn’t say anything until my mom got up.” Someone told everyone how hard it was to take care of my grandparents, and I felt something roar inside me.
I spoke up and told her out loud that she didn’t pay for anything for my grandparents. In a loud voice, I told everyone that I buried them at the funeral that grandmother had planned herself a few days before. People were told the truth when I said that my mom had never paid for any of their care and hadn’t seen them in a long time.

Soon enough, the real faces of the rest of the family members came out.

Camilla tells more of her story: “I had to leave because of my speech.” During my drive home, a cousin called and asked if what I had said was true. After I told her it was true and insisted I had proof, she told me that my mom had been taking money from the whole family for years to pay for my grandparents’ care at a facility because their insurance policies had run out.
She also told me that many people got in trouble because I said in my speech that I had done it all by myself for years with no help. It turned out that many family members were using my grandparents’ illness as an excuse to skip work, and they had invited their coworkers to the funeral. When my family heard me yell, they were in trouble for lying.

She told them, “The cousin then asked me about the inheritance and when it would be given out.” I told her it was already taken care of. I thought I had the right to do it, but now I’m really questioning myself because so many family members called to say I did a terrible job.

Her life and the lives of her family members are a mess right now.

The woman said, “I think I did something wrong when I spoke at the memorial service for my mother.” Nevertheless, I believe it was an important thing to do, and my grandparents would be okay with me being honest with people they knew.

Camilla said, “Right now, some of my family members are going through the worst times.” A uncle of mine lost his job. He was up to a lot of different schemes at work, and he got his coworkers to give my grandmother a total of about $9,000. Some people who liked to spread rumors went to the funeral and told everyone at work about the speech I gave. The uncle got in trouble with HR the next day.
His daughter, who is my cousin, is mad at her dad and my mom. She and two other cousins of mine are now suing my mom for taking their money. They thought they were helping to pay for care at the facilities 24 hours a day. My mom got between 1,000 and 4,000 rand from family every month. She told them how hard it was to take care of her grandparents and gave them a lot of information that wasn’t true.

Camilla told him, “I feel so lost right now.” So many of these people depend on their jobs. Losing them will hurt them, their partners, their children, and even their pets. It makes me feel bad for the other people who were hurt, but I still think this was the right thing to do. Am I wrong about this? What would you do if you were me?”
