Oral myiasis is an uncommon disorder that has been linked to a variety of medical conditions, including: poor oral hygiene; alcoholism; senility; suppurative lesions; severe halitosis; and dementia.
Although ivermectin, a semisynthetic macrolide antibiotic, is sometimes used as a systemic therapy for oral myiasis, the standard treatment is manual removal of the worms one by one.
Human myiasis is preventable via education, although some individuals in impoverished nations live in appalling socioeconomic situations that make them more vulnerable to infestation.
