Wonton Soup

This homemade wonton soup is full of flavor and is perfect for a cozy meal. While you can use store-bought wontons, making them from scratch takes the soup to the next level!


Ingredients:

Wontons:

  • 8 ounces ground pork
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 24 wonton wrappers (3½ inches square)

Soup:

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1½ teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2-3 green onions, finely chopped

Preparation:

Wontons:

  1. Mix the Filling:
    In a large bowl, combine the ground porkrice wine vinegarsoy saucesesame oilgingerbrown sugar, and green onions. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly combined.
  2. Fill the Wontons:
    Place about 1 heaping teaspoon of filling into the center of each wonton wrapper.
  3. Seal the Wontons:
    Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, pressing out any air.
    Lift the long edge of the triangle and bring the two side corners together, overlapping and sealing them with water to form a traditional wonton shape.
  4. Rest the Wontons:
    Set the wontons aside and allow them to rest while preparing the soup.

  1. Prepare the Broth:
    In a medium pot over medium heat, combine chicken brothgarlicsoy saucesesame oil, and green onions. Allow the broth to heat gently as you prepare the wontons.
  2. Cook the Wontons:
    In a large pot, bring about 4 quarts of water to a boil. Once boiling, carefully add the wontons and cook for 5 minutes or until the wontons float and are cooked through.
  3. Combine and Serve:
    Strain the wontons and add them to the warm broth. Serve immediately and enjoy while hot!

  • Make ahead: You can make and freeze the wontons ahead of time. Lay them flat on a tray to freeze and then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag.
  • Wonton wrappers: If you can’t find square wonton wrappers, round ones work too—just fold them into a crescent shape.
