After a life-threatening injury, a farmer needs prayers.

It’s possible that Somai’s carelessness cost him a lot, even his life. We can learn from this.

An Indian farmer had a lot to be thankful for after doctors took out a huge tumor from his neck.

As this tumor grew for twenty years, Somai, a farmer from Basti in the state of Uttar Pradesh who is 55 years old, did nothing about it. He thought it was just a third gland that had gotten so big that it was almost as big as his head.

The tumor, which was harmless, was taken out of Somai. It was about 1.4 kg, which is the same size as three pints of milk.

Somai had to have surgery that lasted almost three hours to get rid of the tumor. Today is the first time in years that Somai can move his head without getting hurt.

One of the doctors at King George Medical Center in Lucknow said it is very rare to find a tumor that big.

Somai was getting bigger too quickly, but a doctor stopped it, and now he’s getting better. He should be able to leave the hospital soon.

When he went to the doctor, they told him that the growth had turned into a sub-mandibular tumor. In other words, this means that his salivary gland was the problem. About half of the tumors that grow there are benign, which means they are not cancerous, and most of them can be treated with a simple surgery.

Somai, who didn’t want to give his last name, had surgery that went well and now he can move his head freely.

Dr. Omkar Vedak, who was on the surgical team that did the surgery on Soma, said, “Somai came into our outpatients’ department on July 12 and was admitted right away.” We decided that the growth had to be taken out as soon as possible after reading the scan results. Because of this, the surgery was done the next day.

“It took us about three hours to finish the surgery, which was pretty hard.” The tumor was under the jaw, and it was already putting a lot of pressure on the carotid arteries. These are the body’s main blood vessels. They bring blood to the face, brain, and neck, among other places.

“We weighed the tumor after taking it out, and it was a huge 1.4 kg.”

The carotid arteries—the blood vessels you feel a pulse in when you hold your neck—were being pressed on by Somai’s tumor. These particular arteries are very important.

These growths usually start out small and are found just below the jawline. About 10 to 20% of all salivary gland tumors start here, and about half of those turn out to be cancerous.

Dr. Vadek went on, “The sub-mandibular glands are right below the jaw.” They are in charge of making saliva come out from under the tongue. There would have been less damage to the organs during surgery if the tumor areas were smaller. That being said, Somai’s lump was pretty big, which made things a little harder for us. No matter what, we were able to finish the job, and now Somai is recovering from surgery. As soon as they take out his stitches, he will be released and able to go home.
