One woman hired a professional nanny who came highly recommended because she was sure she would be a great fit for her family. But hidden cameras can sometimes show things you didn’t expect.
For months, my husband and I had been working long hours and taking care of our two kids, ages 3 and 1. We decided to hire a nanny to help us out. ‘Rachel’ (not her real name) seemed like the perfect person for us. People really liked her, she had been doing this for years, and she seemed to get along well with the kids right away. It made us feel better to finally get some help and some peace of mind.
The nanny seemed to be doing everything right until the parents looked at the camera and saw something strange. This made them wonder what she was up to and made them feel uneasy.
After a couple of weeks, though, something felt… off. There were only small things at first, like the kids being more needy after Rachel left or our toddler being more upset than usual when he woke up from naps. We thought it was because they were getting used to having someone new around. Still, I couldn’t get rid of this feeling that kept coming back.
When we hired Rachel, we set up a nanny cam mostly as a safety measure, and everything seemed fine on it until that point. But one afternoon while I was at work, I decided to check on the camera while the kids were sleeping to see how things were going. When I saw that, I felt something wasn’t quite right.
Rachel’s behavior was hard to predict and worry me.
I knew Rachel would be on the couch, scrolling through her phone, since the kids were already asleep. Anyway, she got up, went into the kitchen, and looked around as if she was seeing if anyone was watching. When I saw her open the drawer where our mail is kept and start going through it, my heart raced. She took out an envelope, looked it over quickly, and then put it back. She then quickly opened and closed the next drawer.
At first glance, the video looked fine—nothing seemed to be missing—but Rachel’s looking through their private things made them feel very betrayed. The girl’s parents chose to keep an eye on her instead of talking to her right away. But the next day, they saw her in their bedroom again, hands on the husband’s watch and looking through their closet.
They knew they couldn’t ignore it any longer, so they chose to do something about it. When Rachel got there, she turned pale when she heard about the video. She tried to play down what she did, but it was clear she knew she was caught. They told her they didn’t want her to keep going, so she quickly left.
There was a big breach of trust, even though no more disturbing footage was found. Because of what happened, they are being extra careful when they look for a new nanny. It’s hard to rebuild trust once it’s been broken.
