Now that I know I’m not our son’s real mother, I’m leaving my husband.

A woman, 27 years old, talks about the shocking moment she learned the child she had been raising for three years was not hers. She wants to get a divorce from her husband when she finds out the truth, but she doesn’t want to be apart from her son. She wrote us a letter with all the information and wants to know what she should do next.

David and Martha fell in love in college.

Martha, 27, is very upset about the way her life has changed, and she feels lost. She needs answers badly because she is too stressed out and emotionally involved to think clearly. “Hi, I’m writing to you to share my problem in the hopes that your readers might be able to help me find the right path,” she said in the letter. I also want to warn other women who might be in the same situation as me to be careful. It would be bad luck for me to wish my worst enemies…”

She says that her love life was picture-perfect at first, “David (30) and I met in college.” Until I met him, I had a crush on him. To my surprise, he felt the same way. Since then, we’ve been together. We both agreed about six years ago that we wanted to start a family.

She found out the hard way that she couldn’t have children.
When the couple tried for years but couldn’t get pregnant, they went to the doctor and said, “We tried for years but nothing.” I was really sad and scared. We went to the doctor because David told us to.

After some tests, the doctor told me I couldn’t have kids. Everything in my world fell apart. I remember that I cried so much and at odd times that I thought I was crazy at one point.

The couple chose to use a surrogate.

“My husband would comfort me and take my mind off of things.” He suggested I adopt, but I wanted to have my own child. It hit me one day. I can’t have children of my own, but I’ve always wanted to be a mom, and surrogacy might be the best way for me to do that. When I talked to David, he at first agreed, but then he changed his mind when he learned how much the procedure costs.

At the time, we were really having a hard time with money, and I wasn’t able to work well because my mental health was getting worse. I told my parents, my cousin Amy, and some other close friends and family about the problem. And to my surprise, Amy offered to be our surrogate to save us money. I was so grateful for her at the time, Martha says.

After a lot of problems, the couple was given a boy.

Martha tells us what came next, “When IVF failed a few times, she finally got pregnant! My husband and I had our son through surrogacy three years ago. He was the best boy ever! I was thrilled. We named him George, and I took care of him all the time.

Amy would visit George a lot as well. And she even watched the kids while I had to take important business trips. David suggested we call her for help. Back then, I didn’t give his idea much thought, but now I think I should have.”

A shocking truth that split the family apart.

George got sick a few days ago and was supposed to go to the hospital for some tests. It was hard for Martha to understand the blood report after she took her son to the doctor. “I recently took our sick son to the doctor,” she said. I found out I’m not his biological mom after they did some blood work. I thought there was a mistake and told my husband that we should sue the fertility clinic. To my horror, he admitted that it wasn’t their fault.

He talked about getting close to my cousin while we were going through IVF and sleeping with her a few times. I was so angry and hurt that I can’t find the words to describe how disappointed I am. The son I love more than anything else in the world isn’t even mine; he was born because my husband cheated on me with my cousin…I told David to leave the house right away! I couldn’t stand to look at him!”

Martha wants to get a divorce, but she doesn’t know how to handle George.
“I already talked to my lawyer about getting a divorce, and I also told my family about it.” Their words mean that they will support me no matter what I decide to do. David keeps calling me, but after what happened, I don’t want to give him another chance. It broke my heart when Amy cried and begged me to forgive her, but I don’t think I can ever do that.

I’m not sure what to do about George. I still love him, but I can’t stand to look at him because it makes me think of my husband’s affair, which hurts. What should I do?” Martha writes to ask for help.
