My boyfriend covers every piece of furniture in the house when I’m on my period.

This article tells a story that sounds like it came straight from a sitcom script, but it actually shows a troubling truth that many women still have to deal with in 2024. In her story, Maria tells of a romance gone wrong with white sheets, bad intentions, and a boyfriend’s shocking misunderstanding of menstruation. At first glance, this story about a relationship quirk might seem funny. But when we take off the layers, we find a bigger problem.

I was dating Jake (30M) for about six months. I am 28 years old. At first, everything seemed fine, but now I see that I missed some warning signs. Jake always had a reason for not letting me over to his house when I had my period for the first five months. He would say that he was busy at work, that his house was being fumigated, or that his family was over. At first, I didn’t see the link.

I finally got to stay at his place while I was on my period last month. I went over after work and couldn’t say a word about what I saw. There were white sheets on every piece of furniture. The couch, armchairs, dining chairs, and even his office chair were all covered in sheets, making the room look like a creepy haunted house.

Jake told me, “Oh, I just thought it would be good to protect the furniture this week.” It was all he said. I asked him to explain what he meant. “You know, because of your… time of the month,” he said. I don’t want any mishaps to damage our stuff.

I told him that in the 16 years I’ve had periods, I’ve never once bled through my clothes and onto furniture. He looked shocked. That’s all he said. “Better safe than sorry, babe.”

Of course, I wouldn’t sit on any of the furniture covered in sheets for the rest of the night. Jake kept telling me I was overreacting. We fought a lot, and I told him it was rude and made me think he thought I was dirty. He replied that he was just being sensible and keeping an eye on his things.

The plot thickened when Jake’s mom called us while we were arguing. She heard us talking and said, “Oh Jake, you’re such a thoughtful boy!” I taught you well.” It turned out that she always did that to “protect the furniture” when she or Jake’s sisters had their periods. Jake really thought this was how people behaved.

I tried to tell both of them why this was a problem, but they didn’t get it. Even better, Jake’s mom offered to buy us “special period furniture covers” as a gift for moving in. I said no as politely as I could while screaming inside.

It was the last straw for me when I heard Jake laughing with his friend about how “women get so emotional over nothing.” I quickly got my things together and left.

Jake has been calling my phone a lot and saying sorry and accusing me of being too sensitive. Some of our friends who know each other think I was too harsh and that I should give him another chance since we’ve only been dating for six months and he “meant well.” But some people are shocked and say I barely avoided being hit.

So, am I overreacting when I end a six-month relationship over some sheets and his fear of his period?
